Disney Genie & Genie+ Overview for DVC Members

Disney launched Genie, Genie+, and Lightning Lane back in October 2019, replacing the old FastPass system. Look, I'll be honest with you - it's more complicated than FastPass ever was, and it costs money. But if you're a DVC member who's already invested thousands in your membership, understanding how this works can save you hours in lines during your stays.
We've had members call us asking if their resale contracts affect Genie access. They don't. Whether you bought direct from Disney or through us at a 30% discount, you get the same Genie benefits.
Understanding Disney Genie and Genie+
Disney split this into two services, and they love making it confusing:
- Disney Genie: Free trip planning tool in the My Disney Experience app. Everyone gets this.
- Genie+: Paid service that lets you skip regular lines. Costs extra every single day you want it.
The free version is actually pretty useful. The paid version? That depends on when you're visiting and how much you hate waiting in lines.
Disney Genie
The free Genie creates daily itineraries based on what you tell it. You punch in your park preferences, must-do attractions, dining reservations, and it spits out a schedule from rope drop to fireworks.
Here's what it does throughout your day:
- Sends alerts when your favorite attractions have short waits
- Suggests nearby restaurants when you're hungry
- Adjusts your plan based on real-time crowd levels
There's also a chat feature for questions. Though honestly, calling the resort directly often gets you better answers than the automated responses.
For DVC members, this is actually valuable. Since you're probably doing longer stays than typical tourists, the free planning tool helps you pace yourself instead of cramming everything into three days.
Disney Genie+
This is where Disney gets your wallet. Genie+ costs $15-30 per person per day at Walt Disney World, depending on crowd levels. At Disneyland it's $20-30. Peak times like Christmas week? You're looking at the higher end.
With Genie+, you can book Lightning Lane access starting at 7:00 AM on your park day. Once you use one reservation or two hours pass, you can book another. It covers about 40 attractions across all four parks.
But here's the catch - the most popular rides aren't included. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Rise of the Resistance, Avatar Flight of Passage, Guardians of the Galaxy. Those require separate Individual Lightning Lane purchases at $10-25 each.
As a DVC member staying longer, you might skip Genie+ on slower days and only buy it when crowds are heavy. We tell our members to check crowd calendars before deciding.
What is Lightning Lane?
Lightning Lane is just Disney's new name for the old FastPass entrance. Same physical queues, different branding.
You've got two types:
Genie+ Lightning Lanes: Included with your $15-30 daily fee. Book one at a time throughout the day.
Individual Lightning Lanes: Separate purchase for the biggest attractions. You can buy up to two per day, and they range from $10-25 depending on the ride and date.
So yeah, if you want to skip lines for Rise of the Resistance AND buy Genie+ for everything else, you're looking at $40-55 per person that day. For a family of four? That's $200+ just for line-skipping privileges.
Using Disney Genie and Genie+ as a DVC Member
Every DVC member gets access to all Genie features. Doesn't matter if you bought your Bay Lake Tower contract direct for $165 per point or got it resale through us for $110 per point. Same access.
The big advantage for DVC members is trip flexibility. Since you're not tied to a package vacation, you can:
- Skip Genie+ entirely on low-crowd days
- Only buy it for Magic Kingdom visits (where it's most valuable)
- Use longer stays to hit attractions during naturally low-wait times
I've seen DVC members save hundreds by being strategic. Instead of buying Genie+ every day of a week-long stay, they'll purchase it for 2-3 peak days and use early park hours the rest of the time.
Planning your point usage efficiently helps too. Use our Disney Vacation Club Point Calculator to see how different room categories and seasons affect your stays. More points saved means more trips, which means more opportunities to visit during slower periods.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is Disney Genie, and how does it help DVC members plan their park days?
Answer: Disney Genie is a free digital planner in the My Disney Experience app. It creates daily schedules based on your preferences and sends real-time updates about wait times and dining options. For DVC members, it's particularly useful because you can plan around longer stays and take advantage of resort proximity for mid-day breaks.
Q2: Does purchasing DVC resale affect my access to Genie+ services?
Answer: Not at all. Whether you bought direct from Disney or resale through a broker like us, you get identical access to Genie, Genie+, and Lightning Lanes. The only DVC benefits affected by resale purchases are Disney Perks like merchandise discounts, not park services.
Q3: Is Genie+ worth it for longer DVC stays?
Answer: It depends on your dates and strategy. For week-long stays, buying Genie+ every day gets expensive fast. We recommend checking crowd calendars and only purchasing it for your busiest park days, typically weekends and Magic Kingdom visits. Use Early Theme Park Entry on slower days instead.
How DVC Members Can Maximize Genie+ and Lightning Lane
DVC members staying on property have a built-in advantage when using the Genie system. Resort guests can purchase Genie+ and Lightning Lane selections at 7:00 AM, a full hour before off-site guests. That early access window makes a real difference for high-demand attractions like Tron Lightcycle Run, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and Avatar Flight of Passage.
The cost of Genie+ fluctuates based on demand. During slower periods, you might pay $16 per person per day. During holiday weeks and peak season, that number can climb above $30. Individual Lightning Lane selections for the most popular rides run $10 to $25 each on top of Genie+. For a family of four during spring break, the total Genie+ cost for a five-day trip can exceed $600.
DVC members who visit frequently develop strategies that reduce or eliminate the need for Genie+. Arriving at park opening (rope drop) and heading straight to the most popular attraction remains the single most effective approach. A family that reaches the park 15 minutes before opening can typically experience two or three headliner attractions before standby lines exceed 60 minutes.
What Changed from FastPass to Genie+
The old FastPass system was free, unlimited, and available to every guest. You could walk up to a FastPass kiosk, scan your MagicBand, and receive a return time window for an attraction. There was no daily cost, no app requirement, and no complicated booking strategy needed.
Genie+ replaced that simplicity with a paid, app-based system that requires more planning and a willingness to spend. DVC members who bought their memberships partly because of the free FastPass benefit felt the sting of that change more than most. The resort rooms cost the same, annual dues keep rising, and a perk that was once included now costs extra every visit.
Despite the frustration, the Genie system does offer DVC members more flexibility than the old FastPass. You can book return times throughout the day as earlier selections are used, stack multiple reservations for the afternoon, and modify plans on the fly through the My Disney Experience app. For members who visit multiple times per year, learning the system pays dividends in shorter wait times and more attractions per day.
How DVC Membership Changes the Disney Experience
Day guests and DVC members visit the same parks, eat at the same restaurants, and ride the same attractions. The difference is everything around the park visit. DVC members stay in villa-style accommodations with full kitchens, separate bedrooms, and in-room laundry. They book 11 months ahead at their home resort, locking in rooms during holidays and peak seasons before the general public even knows availability has opened. They walk back to their resort mid-afternoon for a pool break or a nap, which is something you can only do when your room is five minutes from the park entrance.
Over the course of a week-long trip, those differences add up. A family that can eat breakfast and a few lunches in their villa saves $300 to $500 compared to three restaurant meals per day. A two-bedroom villa that sleeps a family of six costs the same number of points whether you use it for five nights or seven, because points are consumed per night regardless of group size. The per-person cost of a DVC stay for a larger family is simply lower than booking hotel rooms for the same group.
Resale contracts give you the same villa access at a fraction of the direct price. DVC Sales has been helping buyers find the right contract at the right price since 1999. Our inventory covers all 16 DVC resorts and is updated daily. Browse contracts at dvcsales.com/dvc-resale-listings or call us at (407) 205-1435 to talk through your options.
