Where Can I Use DVC Resale Points

Where Can I Use DVC Resale Points?

Disney Vacation Club Resort

When you purchase Disney Vacation Club (DVC) on the resale market, understanding where you can use your points is essential to making the right decision. The booking flexibility you'll have depends on which resort you purchase at, when your contract was originally sold, and whether Disney considers it a legacy or newer property. We've helped hundreds of families through this process, and the key is knowing these distinctions upfront.

Legacy Resorts Offer Maximum Flexibility

If you purchase a resale contract at one of the original DVC resorts (what Disney calls "legacy" properties), you'll have access to most of the DVC system. These legacy resorts include Disney's Old Key West Resort, Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, Disney's BoardWalk Villas, Disney's Beach Club Villas, Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas (Jambo House and Kidani Village), Disney's Wilderness Lodge Villas (Boulder Ridge and Copper Creek), Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney's Polynesian Villas & Bungalows, Disney's Bay Lake Tower, Disney's Contemporary Resort, and Aulani in Hawaii.

With a legacy resale contract, you can book at any DVC resort that was built before 2019. This means you'll have the same 11-month home resort booking window and 7-month booking window at other eligible resorts that direct purchasers enjoy. The only resorts you can't book with legacy resale points are Disney's Riviera Resort and The Villas at Disneyland Hotel, both of which opened after Disney implemented the resale restrictions.

This flexibility is significant. You can plan a stay at Bay Lake Tower overlooking the Magic Kingdom one year, then book a beachfront villa at Aulani the next. Your points work across the entire legacy system, giving you options for different types of Disney vacations.

Newer Resorts Have Home Resort Only Access

Disney's Riviera Resort and The Villas at Disneyland Hotel operate under different rules for resale purchasers. If you purchase a resale contract at either of these properties, your points can only be used to book stays at your home resort. This restriction is absolute.

Riviera resale owners can only book at Riviera. Disneyland Hotel resale owners can only book at the Disneyland Hotel. You can't use these points to stay anywhere else in the DVC system, even other newer resorts.

This limitation doesn't make these contracts worthless, but it does change the value proposition. If you love Riviera Resort and plan to return there regularly, a Riviera resale contract can still save you substantial money compared to purchasing direct from Disney. The same applies to the Disneyland Hotel if you're primarily interested in Disneyland vacations.

However, if you value the ability to experience different DVC resorts over time, you'll want to focus on legacy resort contracts instead.

What About Non-DVC Experiences?

All resale contracts, regardless of home resort, lose access to Disney's "Membership Extras." This includes Disney Cruise Line bookings, Adventures by Disney trips, and stays at non-DVC Disney hotels through the Concierge Collection.

In our experience, most families purchase DVC primarily for the resort accommodations, and these restrictions rarely impact their vacation plans. The value of DVC has always been in the spacious villa accommodations and the points system that lets you stay longer for less money than comparable hotel rates.

You'll still have full access to the DVC reservation system, Member Services, and your online account. You can bank unused points, borrow from next year's allocation, and transfer points between contracts if you own multiple memberships. These core benefits remain intact with resale ownership.

Calculating Your Point Needs

Understanding where you can use your points helps you decide how many to purchase. Most families benefit from estimating their vacation plans for the next two to three years, calculating the points needed for those trips, and purchasing based on that average.

Point requirements vary significantly between resorts and room types. A studio villa at Old Key West requires fewer points than the same accommodation at Bay Lake Tower. If you're considering a legacy contract for the booking flexibility, factor in the different point costs when planning your purchase size.

Our DVC resale listings show current point charts for each resort, and you can use Disney's point calculator to estimate your needs. Remember that point requirements can change annually, though major adjustments are relatively rare.

The Financial Advantage of Resale

Regardless of booking restrictions, resale contracts offer substantial savings over direct purchases from Disney. Current Disney retail prices range from $205 per point for some Walt Disney World resorts to $310 per point for Grand Californian, while resale prices typically run 30-50% less.

Even with the limitations on newer resorts, you're still purchasing a deeded real estate interest that runs until at least 2054 for most properties. Your ownership includes the same villa accommodations, the same reservation system access, and the same Member Services support as direct purchasers.

The restriction trade-offs often make financial sense. For example, if you're primarily interested in Riviera Resort, purchasing resale there for significantly less money can be smarter than purchasing direct for booking flexibility you won't use.

Making the Right Choice for Your Family

The decision between legacy and newer resort contracts comes down to your priorities. If you want maximum flexibility and plan to experience different Disney destinations, focus on legacy resort contracts. Popular options include Saratoga Springs for its lower point requirements, Animal Kingdom Villas for savanna views, or Bay Lake Tower for its proximity to Magic Kingdom.

If you've found a specific resort you love and plan to return there regularly, purchasing resale at that property can maximize your savings. This is particularly true for Riviera Resort, which offers a central location and newer accommodations, or the Disneyland Hotel, which provides easy access to Disneyland and California Adventure.

We always recommend reviewing annual dues as part of your decision. Dues vary between resorts and represent your ongoing ownership costs. Some resorts with lower per-point purchase prices have higher annual dues, which affects your long-term value calculation.

The reservation booking windows also matter for popular travel times. Having 11-month priority at your home resort can be crucial for booking during peak weeks like Christmas or spring break. If you have flexibility in your travel dates, the 7-month booking window for other resorts is usually sufficient.

Understanding the Resale Process

When you purchase any DVC resale contract, Disney has the right of first refusal (ROFR). This means they can match your agreed-upon price and purchase the contract themselves instead of approving the sale to you. ROFR protects Disney's direct sales but also indicates when you've found a good deal on the resale market.

Our team handles the entire ROFR process, including the required estoppel certificate that confirms the contract details. The process typically takes 30-45 days from contract signing to closing, assuming Disney waives their right of first refusal.

Once you close on your contract, you'll have immediate access to your points and can make reservations right away. There's no waiting period or probationary period with resale ownership.

Getting Expert Guidance

Every family's situation is different, and the right contract depends on your vacation preferences, budget, and long-term plans. We've been helping families navigate these decisions for over 25 years, and we're available seven days a week to discuss your options.

Our market analysis can help you understand current pricing trends, and we can walk you through the pros and cons of different resort contracts based on your specific needs. We don't charge buyers any fees beyond the standard $500 administrative fee, so our guidance comes without additional cost pressure.

Whether you're leaning toward a legacy resort for maximum flexibility or interested in a newer property despite the booking restrictions, we'll make sure you understand exactly what you're purchasing and how it fits your vacation plans.

Every Way to Use DVC Points: Resorts, Cruises, and Beyond

DVC points give you access to more than just the resort where your deed is held. The full list of options is wider than most buyers realize going in. At the core, you can book stays at all 16 DVC resorts worldwide using your points. That includes the Walt Disney World resorts, Disneyland Hotel (if you purchased after it was added to the program), Aulani in Hawaii, Vero Beach Resort in Florida, and Hilton Head Island Resort in South Carolina. For resale buyers, the good news is that all standard resort bookings work exactly the same as for direct buyers. You book at 11 months out for your home resort and 7 months out for all other resorts. There's no resale restriction on which resorts you can stay at.

Beyond resort stays, DVC members can use points toward Disney Cruise Line sailings through the member exchange program. The exchange rate isn't always the most efficient use of points, but it gives you flexibility if you want to combine a park trip with a cruise itinerary. Adventures by Disney guided vacation packages can also be booked with points through the member booking system. These are fully guided trips to destinations around the world and give families a Disney-quality travel experience outside the parks entirely. Interval International is the third-party exchange network that Disney partners with, and it opens up thousands of timeshare resorts globally for point exchanges. The Interval International access is available to both direct and resale DVC buyers.

What resale buyers do miss out on is the Membership Extras program, which covered things like discounted annual passes, park discounts, and other perks that Disney eliminated for resale purchases starting in 2019. That change affected new resale purchases made after that date. For the core use of DVC points, which is booking Disney resort accommodations, resale and direct ownership are functionally identical. The villas, the villa kitchens, the home resort priority, Early Entry, and all the standard DVC member services work the same way regardless of how you bought. If you want to understand exactly what you get and what you don't based on how you buy, call us at (407) 205-1435 and we'll walk through the specifics for whichever resort you're considering.

We want to thank the staff at DVC Sales for their great help and outstanding service while our family purchased our Vero Beach contract. We spoke with Mark Webb who helped us submit our offer. Within the week, the transaction was closed.

Mitzi and I couldn't have had a more positive experience as the one which we had, in selling some of our DVC points through DVC Sales with Mark and Lori Webb. and their staff. The whole process was transparent, seamless and we were being fully briefed as to the. progress. Thanks to Mark we were kept aware as to what was happening with the listing, with the ROFR bu Disney, and with the closing process completed, all in a short months' time. We couldn't have asked for a better group than DVC Sales for the sale. they were honest . amd truly caring on our behalf. Mitzi and Lee Tucholski

Just sold some of my points and Mark and Lori were wonderful. I’m very, very happy with the experience. I got an excellent price and now someone else gets to enjoy just a bit more of DVC. The website is great to work with too. I will always use DVC Sales and encourage you to do the same.

Foreign sellers, beware; they will not provide correct information to you about what you can expect when selling. They also, at the end of the process, hit you with fees you did not expect, and you are too late to do anything about it.

I could not imagine being happier with my experience using DVC Sales to sell our Old Key West membership. We enjoyed so many years of Disney vacations. While on your website I started a chat that turned into a call with Lori. She took the time to explain how the website works. Within a few minutes I had created my account and listed my membership for sale. Within 3-4 weeks we received an offer and sold our membership. Thankyou Lori and DVC Sales!

Mark, today we have just received the last check for our 4th contract you sold for us. Our experience was outstanding you deserve the acknowledgement for your service. You remind me of the way customers were treated years ago. Everybody we spoke with or chatted online was friendly and helpful. Although the process took a few months, it was worth the wait. We hope the families who purchased on contracts have as much enjoyment as we have had. If anyone is looking to buy or sell a DVC membership you can use our name. Thank you again!
